What is the Nipper Education Program?

Nipper Education Programs are delivered at lifesaving clubs across Victoria throughout summer. Nippers is an opportunity for children to participate in safe, fun and organised activities in a beach environment, preparing them to be future lifesavers.

Clubs tailor their program to suit the needs and varying skill levels of their junior members and unique beach conditions.

Nipper Program Requirements

To be involved in Nippers, there is a certain swimming standard that must be met depending on the child's age group. These are known as Preliminary Swim Assessment, including swim, float and submersion which is completed by the nipper volunteers before the child takes part in swim activities. This will determine whether they can progress to the water-based nipper activities under normal water safety supervision or they will require closer supervision.

Please find all the information about our preliminary swim assessments on the members area of Club Gateway.

Parent Volunteers

Nipper Education Programs are delivered by a dedicated group of volunteer lifesaving club members. The ongoing success and expansion of the nipper program is thanks to the support of our motivated parents and volunteers.

We encourage parents to get involved and share the experience of Nippers with their children. There are many ways in which parents and volunteers can get involved and help deliver a successful program, ensuring positive experiences for all nippers.

The Age Manager role is vital to the successful delivery of a club’s Nipper program. This role is perfect for parents, guardians or volunteers who want to play an active role in the delivery and implementation of their clubs Nipper program.

What is Bush Nippers?

Bush Nippers is a regional and rural inland adaptation of coastal nipper education programs and LSV’s highly successful Lifesaving Education Programs.

This program aims to build lifesaving and water safety knowledge and skills of children aged 5 to 14 years in open water environments.

Programs are offered at any location – whether that’s the beach, river, lake or pool. LSV’s Education Team can deliver the programs or alternatively, we have a range of partners who also deliver Bush Nipper programs.

Bush Nippers is designed to offer progressive learning experiences that are suitable for all abilities.
