Surfing into Leadership: Kai’s Journey Beyond the Flags

As the sun rises over Torquay’s iconic coastline, volunteer lifesaver Kai is already on the sand, ready to serve.
A familiar face at the Torquay Surf Life Saving Club, Kai’s journey in lifesaving began at Williamstown S&LSC as a junior before moving to Torquay in 2014.
Today, he’s not only a professional lifeguard and volunteer patrol captain but also a proud graduate of Life Saving Victoria’s Leadership Beyond The Flags program.
With over 5,000 beachgoers flocking to the Surf Coast each summer, the role of lifesavers like Kai is more vital than ever. But for Kai, lifesaving is more than just patrolling the beach. It’s about community, connection, and leadership.
In 2022, Kai attended the Advanced Lifesaving Camp, an experience he describes as transformative.
“Adopting the lifeguard mindset and connecting with like-minded people from other clubs was incredibly valuable,” he reflects.
The camp sharpened his ability to manage major incidents, work under pressure, and lead with confidence—skills that have proven essential both on and off the beach.
Building on that foundation, Kai took part in the Leadership Beyond The Flags program in 2024. Though it spanned just two days, the impact was lasting.
“Every session captivated me,” Kai says.
“From hearing a Police Crisis Negotiator share insights to participating in a mock committee with experienced members, each part was directly relevant to leadership development.”
The program deepened Kai’s understanding of what it means to lead within a club environment. He learned how to navigate difficult conversations, balance competing interests, and foster stronger relationships. These skills have transformed his approach to challenges in lifesaving and beyond.
Now a university student studying arts and commerce, Kai continues to give back. He regularly speaks to local groups, including aged care residents, about his journey in lifesaving and the importance of community connection in beach safety.
His stories spark smiles, memories, and meaningful conversations, reminding everyone of the passion behind the red and yellow.
Kai encourages others to take the leap, and be part of the Leadership Beyond the Flags program.
“It’s a defining experience,” he says.
“You’ll walk away with skills, friendships, and a renewed sense of purpose.”
