Swim Teacher

This course is the required qualification for anybody seeking employment as a Swim Teacher in the aquatic industry. LSV's Swim Teacher training course is inclusive of an industry leading Swim Teacher license and free CPR training to start you on your teaching journey. LSV's course is recognised by the Department of Education and the aquatic industry.

Successful completion of this course will result in the award of the following units:

SISSS00132 Swimming and Water Safety Teacher

  • Plan swimming lessons
  • Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy and mobility skills
  • Teach water safety and survival skills
  • Teach swimming strokes
  • Perform water rescues
Teacher of Infant and Toddler

This course will equip candidates with the skills and knowledge required to select an appropriate progression of activities to promote the development of infants and toddlers over six (6) months of age in an aquatic environment.

About this course

The course focus includes the role of the water familiarisation, water safety, teaching strategies, communication and class management techniques.

This course requires candidates to hold the following prerequisite unit:

  • SISCAQU024 Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy, and mobility and SISCAQU025 Teach water safety and survival skills

Candidates can mail a certified copy of the prerequisite to LSV prior to the course or bring the original document (and a copy for us) to your course.

Teacher of People with a Disability

This course will equip candidates with the skills and knowledge required to identify the needs of participants with a disability, assist them to safely enter and exit the water and to provide appropriate support during aquatic activities.

About this course

The course focus includes the role of the safe access, water safety, teaching strategies, communication and teaching strategies, specific to working with people with a disability.

This course requires candidates to hold the following prerequisite unit:

  • SISCAQU024 Teach water familiarisation, buoyancy, and mobility and SISCAQU025 Teach water safety and survival skills

In-service Swim Teacher Training

LSV are committed to supporting in-service training across all aquatic facilities. These vital skills maintenance and professional development sessions are an mandatory requirement for all qualified/licensed Swim Teachers and are clearly defined in the industry guidelines. 

In-service training - All-year facilities

Swim Teachers operating at aquatic facilities open all year are required to complete in-service training on a quarterly basis. 

The in-service training package covers the key provisions in the Swim Teacher course, gives consideration to your facility design/operating environment and meets the obligations of the industry guidelines.

In-service training - Seasonal facilities

Swim Teacher operating at seasonal aquatic facilities are required to complete in-service training prior to the season, and every three months thereafter.

Who should apply?

High quality Swimming Teachers are in high demand across the aquatic industry and competitive rates of pay are available. Those with the passion and patients for teaching a vital life skill should consider becoming a swimming teacher.

  • Entry requirements: Minimum age for entry to the LSV Swim Teacher course is 16 years.
  • Course prerequisites: Candidates must hold a current CPR qualification, WWCC or VIT registration prior to the issuance of a Licence.
  • Health and fitness: Candidates are to have a reasonable level of health and fitness.
  • Enrolment information: Access the LSV training portal and search for a convenient course near you.
Industry licence

GSPO 2.8. Licensing 

2.8.1. All Swimming and water safety teachers should be licensed no more than every 3 years by process of verification of skills assessment and ongoing professional development.

2.8.2. Licensing of Swimming and water safety teachers should include but not be limited to:

  • Requiring and citing evidence of training and assessment including CPR and basic water rescue techniques
  • Requiring evidence of on-going professional development in both water safety and teaching techniques
  • Requiring an assessment that the swimming and water safety teacher remains a fit and proper person to fulfil their duties

Become a Workplace Supervisor

Following completion of the LSV Swim Teacher course or extension courses, successful candidates are required to undertake on-the-job assessment activities and industry onboarding as part of the course assessment and licence issuance processes. This onboarding should happen under the guidance of an LSV approved Workplace Supervisor.

The role of a Workplace Supervisor is to support and guide new Swim Teachers as they hone their new skills in a safe and practical environment, and gain experience teaching under supervision. This helps new Swim Teachers develop the skills, knowledge, and confidence to teach independently.

Getting started

To become an approved LSV Workplace Supervisor, a person should be appropriately qualified and endorsed:

  • Complete the (free) LSV Workplace Supervisor eLearning
  • Hold Swim Teacher skill set qualification (SISSS00112 or SISSS00132)
  • Current CPR Qualification
  • Current industry recognised Swim Teacher licence.
  • Maintain Working with Children Check (WWCC) or VIT Card.

LSV Workplace Supervisors should also have appropriate experience:

  • 12 months or 700 hours of teaching experience.
  • Actively involved in the Victorian aquatic industry.
Workplace Supervisor eLearning

The free LSV Workplace Supervisor eLearning has been designed to assist prospective Supervisors to undertake introductory learning associated with training and assessment activities and to gain an insight into how they can best support new Swim Teachers. The eLearning is mandatory and includes module has three topics covering: 

  • Mentoring in the workplace
  • Providing work skill instruction
  • Contributing to assessment
