Glen Eira Centre Supervisor and lifeguard Caydence Bezzina grew up around water, both in competitive swimming and in surf lifesaving with Nippers, so she knows how important it is to learn water safety skills from a young age.

In 2025, Caydence and her colleagues at Glen Eira Leisure were named the Pool Lifeguard Challenge champions, the fourth time the facility has won the Challenge.

Glen Eira was Caydence’s first lifeguarding job, and there’s one consistent risk she sees at her facilities: people testing their abilities without safeguards in place.

Caydence says there is one age group that underestimates their abilities at pool facilities: “Teenagers in particular tend to push the boundaries of where they will jump, dive, and swim, which puts both themselves and others at risk.”

Our Watch Around Water programs is specifically targeted towards these risks. Pool facilities work with parents of young children who often overestimate their child’s abilities or underestimate the likelihood of something unexpected happening to their child.
