Pool Lifeguard

This course is the required qualification for anybody seeking employment as a Pool Lifeguard in the aquatic industry. It is also recommended for anyone who is responsible for the supervision and safety of people in aquatic facilities. This course will equip candidates with the skills and knowledge required to supervise swimming pool users. 

About this course

The course focus includes pool surveillance, scanning techniques, rescue skills, oxygen resuscitation and emergency care.

This course requires candidates to hold the following prerequisite unit:

  • HLTAID011 Provide first aid

Candidates can mail a certified copy of the prerequisite to LSV prior to the course or bring the original document (and a copy for us) to your course.

Successful completion of this course will result in the award of the following units:

SISSS00133 Pool Lifeguard Skillset

  • Supervise patron safety in aquatic locations
  • Perform water rescues
  • Perform complex water rescues
  • Provide oxygen resuscitation and therapy in an aquatic environment
  • Provide first aid (Credit Transfer)

In addition, candidates will also receive:

  • Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Pool Bronze Medallion

This course will equip candidates with the skills and knowledge to undertake aquatic supervision, understand scanning strategies and techniques, undertake aquatic rescue and provide emergency care. It is recommended for any person involved in aquatic exercise, swim coaching, aquatic excursions or who have responsibility for the supervision and safety of people in and around swimming pools.

About this course

The course focus includes safety awareness, casualty assessment, resuscitation, survival skills, rescue techniques and emergency care. The course is based on the long standing RLSA Bronze Medallion and remains the industry leading introduction for water safety at aquatic facilities.

Successful completion of this course will result in the award of the following units:

  • HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
Provide First Aid

This course will equip candidates to act quickly and confidently in an emergency situation. The course is recommended for those who are employed as an organisational health and safety representative, as well as those responsible for the care of others including teachers, childcare workers, aged care workers, sports coaches/trainers and parents/guardians.

About this course

The course focus includes patient assessment, recognising signs and symptoms, risk mitigation, resuscitation, first aid treatment, incident management and emergency services communication.

In-Service Pool Lifeguard Training

LSV are committed to supporting in-service training across all aquatic facilities. These vital skills maintenance and professional development sessions are an mandatory requirement for all qualified Pool Lifeguards and are clearly defined in the industry guidelines. 

In-service training - All-year facilities

Pool Lifeguard operating at aquatic facilities open all year are required to complete in-service training on a quarterly basis. 

The in-service training package covers the key provisions in the Pool Lifeguard course, gives consideration to your facility design/operating environment and meets the obligations of the industry guidelines.

In-service training - Seasonal facilities

Pool Lifeguard operating at seasonal aquatic facilities are required to complete in-service training prior to the season, and every three months thereafter. 

The in-service training package covers the key provisions in the Pool Lifeguard course, gives consideration to your facility design/operating environment and meets the obligations of the industry guidelines.

Who should apply?

Who should apply?

Dedicated and responsible Pool Lifeguards are always in high demand all year across the aquatic industry and competitive rates of pay are available. Those with the passion for safety and helping other should consider becoming a Pool Lifeguard.

  • Entry requirements: Recommended minimum age for entry to the LSV Pool Lifeguard course is 16 years.
  • Course prerequisites: Candidates must hold a current First Aid certificate prior to course commencement.
  • Health and fitness: Candidates are to have a reasonable level of health and fitness.
  • Enrolment information: Access the LSV training portal and search for a convenient course near you.
Maintaining currency

GSPO 9.7. Pool Lifeguard Reaccreditation

9.7.1. Pool Lifeguards are required to be assessed every 12 months to demonstrate currency of their knowledge and skills.

9.7.2. Assessments should be conducted by an Assessor who is either employed by an RTO or acting under the registration of an RTO.

9.7.4. Assessment of a Pool Lifeguard should ensure the Lifeguard has current competence in the following knowledge and skills changes to current industry practices, supervision of patrons in aquatic facilities, performing two rescues in deep water, performing spinal immobilisation, stabilisation and removal of a suspected spinal injury casualty while working as a team, performing two-person resuscitation on both an adult and child and completing documentation.
